What foods should I eat to help with a workout/exercise program?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I am not fat at all…but, I have never really ever eaten that healthy. I run a couple times a week. And I want to start a workout program (i.e run, lift, run, lift, etc). I also want to start eating more healthy. I don’t drink anymore soda (I haven’t for awhile) and as of this year I am cutting out fast food. But what do I buy at the store thats "healthy" that will work well with my execise program? Thank you.

The following link will take you to an article that details "healthy" foods you can get at the grocery store. http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/stella9.htm

What is the best leg exercise to do to firm and build some muscle?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I dont want bulky looking legs, but need to build some muscle to try to make them look sexier
Im underwieght, but will be gaining weight soon due to quitting smoking, lunges and squats are too hard on my knees…running is okay, but I can feel it in my knees after a while..my upper body and abs are how i want them but i tend to get lazy with my leg exercies and want to find a couple that wont hurt my knees and will tone up my legs…my legs look like chicken legs right now

big muscles come from the diet not from the exercise. the back squat is the single best overall leg exercise.

Are home workouts as effective as gym ones?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

My gym membership is nearly up,and im not going to renew it as its too overcrowded and my workout times are 2hours + i’m toying with the idea of getting weights/bench for my home, will my workouts be as effective as in the gym?

Yes, they can be.

Have you got dumbells, barbells, med balls, etc?

Then go for it!

Motivation can be an issue when training from home…

How long does it take to see results from one of those home gyms?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I have been working out three times a day, an hour each time, for 7 years and still just as fat as can be. Someone told me that if I put weights on the machine, it might work better.

**rolls eyes**

Good God I just lost a pound laughing at your question. Btw…… can I get my money back from this mail order groom thing. I’m starting to question your intellect. I couldn’t marry a man I couldn’t…. well…… lift. (intellectually of course…. I would never criticize your rolls and rolls of fat that are billowing over your waist band)

What type of home gym do you use and why?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

We are researching, and ultimately going to buy a home gym (new or used). We have narrowed it down to 3 companies; Life Fitness, Precor, or Body Solid. We don’t want to spend $1500 on a new one, and realize that most people buy these and use them for a few months at most, so buying one on ebay or whatnot is not an issue. Just want to know what other people think if they’ve tried any of these. All and any feedback is appreciated.

use a Joe Wieder 5 station with free weights.Hate going to gyms, steroid punks pi** me off

What kind of at-home fitness machine has worked best for you?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I asked which is better gym or at home but forgot to ask which machine the at home users liked the most

I don’t like gyms…even if they were free, I would not go there. Everybody’s sweating in the same room and I cannot really be comfortable in front of strangers, sweating as well.
Gyms are only good if you’re very strong and need a lot of heavy, expensive different machines or you need to be part of a class to get the motivation from a group (I do fine by myself).
I’m just an average woman so all I need is a good neighborhood, a stationary bicycle and some weights (and also my thigh master and my abs bar and my push-up handles…I have very thin wrists)…and a big sturdy piano bench I use as a weight bench.
At home, I do not have to drive there and I can do my abs in my underwear…
On my cardio days, I use an old DP Air Gometer, which is a stationary bicycle with upper body exercise.
It’s bulky and noisy but I get the best cardio workout on it, watching TV full blast…cardios plus lower and upper body workout.
(I have a five day routine that I just repeat…walk, cardio, walk, rest, weights, walk, cardio, walk, rest, weights)

Any exercise routines that will help me get fit and lose weight?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

I wanna get fit and have a nice body :)
Do you have any exercise routines that helped you lose a lot of weight?
Also what kind of foods should I eat?

Eat healthy foods like citrus fruits, green veggies, meat, eggs, milk, whole grain/wheat, etc… My exercise routine is doing 50 ball crunches a day, all together. Dancing, swimming, jogging, running, sports, and yoga also works.

What muscles would this exercise routine work/ what muscles would it not work?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

What muscles would a simple exercise routine of doing push-ups, sit-ups, and running work / strengthen? Also, what muscles would it lack?

Push ups are for your chest,
sit ups for abs
running doesn’t train your muscle, just your endurance…

No work for back, legs, those are biggest muscles in your body so definitely must add something to train them. Hit the gym. Nothing is better than working out in the gym with squats, deadlifts, bench presses etc. Here are best exercises:

Weight loss is an overall process and there are no magic answers. Pay no attention to weight loss supplements and pills and all the latest fads. You need to think about many factors but most of them are related to issues we’ve known about for a very long time. There are many sensible things you can do that will make a tremendous difference over the long term if you need to lose weight. It can be done in a healthy way. This is what has worked for me.

Keeping a food journal really does help. It will give you a much better sense of how much you are eating, and when, and why.

Make a few additional small changes – walk everywhere, always use stairs instead of elevators, walk on escalators, get up and move around at least once an hour if your work or your life in general is sedentary, walk every day, use a pedometer. Walking 10,000 steps a day is a really good idea. Build up to a long brisk walk everyday, or most days. Be more active and watch less TV and spend less time on the computer. Buy one piece of exercise equipment to have at home and be strict with yourself about using it. Sometimes you can find mini-steppers or exercise bikes at second hand stores and thrift stores for just a few dollars.

Start a weight lifting routine. Join a gym. Possibly you can find one that has someone who specializes in weight lifting programs for beginners. Weight lifting will increase your metabolism as well as improve posture and appearance overall. Even if you can’t get to the gym you can work out at home using things around the house. Invest in a good weight training book. The Dummies series actually has a good one.

In terms of diet, cut out or reduce things like junk food, pop, fat, fast food. Eat more fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish. Particularly if you choose a vegetarian lifestyle include natural peanut butter, hummus, dried fruit and nuts. Pay close attention to getting the nutrients your body needs to be healthy.

Make your portion sizes smaller. Use a smaller plate – in our society we have become accustomed to thinking that we need a large plate of food at every meal, and we don’t. About quarter of your plate of food should be protein and at least half of it should be veggies.

Learn to count calories. At your current weight and activity level, you may possibly need about 2000 calories or more to maintain your current weight. So you will lose weight at a reasonable and healthy rate if you cut back to about 1600 or 1700 calories a day.

Eat small amounts frequently, rather than three large meals. Never skip breakfast. Include some protein in your breakfast. It will help get you through the day.

Drink plenty of water, at least 8 big glasses of water a day, and more if it is very hot, if you sweat a lot, or if you are exercising intensely, and eliminate fruit juices. Fruit juices have too many calories, so get your vitamins from fresh fruit, not the juice. You will begin to see changes in your body.

Vary your routines. Don’t eat the same number of calories every day (vary your calories from 1400 a day to 1900 or 2000 some days), eat a variety of foods, and do different kinds and amounts of exercise. You will lose weight much more efficiently if you mix things up from time to time so that your body doesn’t adjust to any one routine.

An area that many people overlook is getting enough sleep. You are much more likely to overeat or to binge eat if you are tired and not well rested, so get enough sleep.

What kind of cardio exercise can I do at home?

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

Usually I go on the treadmill for 30-45 minutes to an hour. Today, I’m not allowed on the treadmill so is there any cardio exercise I can do in my room? Blast some music and dance? Run in place?

I’m on a 1200-1400 calorie diet too.

Run in place, dance, jumping jacks, lye on your back and move your legs as if you were on a bike.
