how does the weight on my home gyms bench press compare to an actual bar press?

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

I have a marcy pro platinum home gym, which uses pulleys etc to attach the desired weight to do multiple different exercises. It has a bench press function, but I dont think that it is on par with a real bench press, as i can bench over 155 lbs on there, but im a 14 year old boy who weighs around 110. Any ideas on how it compares? thanks in advance

To put that into perspective for you,on the smith machine I can bench 290Lbs but free weight its only 195Lbs.

Conclusion: Your machine is much easier than a free weight bench press and also free weight involves a lot of secondary muscles as stabilizers whereas machine works only the chest.

compact home gyms you recommend?

Wednesday, October 5th, 2011

Hi, my wife and I are moving into our first apartment next month and we are looking for a very small home gym. Maybe one that attaches to a door or one that can sit against a wall but not be attached to the wall. Can any one recommend something good? We live in New Hampshire and want to stay fit during our first winter and all the other winters to come.

I would recommend along with the other recommendations a swiss or exercise ball make sure you get the right size for your height. There are many exercises that can be done with a ball. Ball can be used as a bench substitute as well. You also might want to consider some resistance bands. I know many exercise demos and websites and books you could use. If you have any questions or would like my help please email me komodo_dragon1973@yahoo.com

What are the best home gyms?

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

I’m looking to purchase a home gym, but need it to take up a small footprint. I like the pulley systems, because it give you a wide range of workouts. Does anyone have any recommendations? I have a budget of around $1000 towards my new gym. I was looking at a bowflex, but I’m not sure that’s what I want to do at this time. I saw a nice stack system made my hoist, but it was a little out of my price range.

Any ideas?

you cant go wrong with bowflex!

What are some good at home gyms?

For a small apt

2 sets of dumbbells (one light, one heavy) & some ankle weights are all you need. Much easier to store and you can do 90% of the necessary exercises. A low profile weight bench would help and it would store well in a closet.

Stack weight vs. bow resistance home gyms…?

Monday, November 8th, 2010

I’m looking at stacked weight and bow resistance home gyms and would like opinions on them. What do you all own or prefer to use?

I didn’t do well with free weights because of the need to reposition the weights frequently. I feel that rearranging the cords and pulleys is going to lead to a similar issue with the bow resistance systems.

In your mind what are the biggest disadvantages of the stacked weight systems? What I see so far is that they are louder and less smooth…

I’m nearly decided on the Marcy 1559 which can be seen here: http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-Marcy-MD-1559-Home-Gym-with-150-FREE-SHIPPING_W0QQitemZ110171314115QQihZ001QQcategoryZ44083QQcmdZViewItem. I can pick it up for about $300 at the local Dunhams.
Cletus-

After some chatting and web surfing I’m decided on stacked weight. I don’t consider it more trouble because I think messing with the cords/pulleys/carabeaners is a lot of trouble.

Thanks

Stack weights with out a doubt, yeah they are much more troublesome considering the amount of room they take up. But they are in my opinion much more effective.
